Peer Mentor Award

The Syracuse University, College of Arts & Sciences | Maxwell School Peer Mentor Award, signifies completion of Peer Mentor’s responsibilities of helping new international students successfully transit into Syracuse University, for a duration of seven months. Peer Mentors demonstrate new students how to utilize academic resources and opportunities, help new students analyze the college’s academic requirements and expectations, and develop leadership skills and professionalism. Peer Mentor meets a group of 10 mentees on a weekly basis to facilitate academic discussions, as well as responding to mentees’ inquiries and hosting cohort building activities. The Peer Mentor Award demonstrates that a student has obtained leadership skills, civic engagement capabilities and professionalism, necessary for success in employment market and/or graduate school. Purpose: To indicate that a Syracuse University undergraduate student has completed required responsibilities of serving as a Peer Mentor for new international students attending the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell School of Citizenship, helping them successfully transit into Syracuse University. - Demonstrate new students how to utilize academic resources and opportunities - Help new students analyze the college’s academic requirements and expectations - Develop leadership skills and professionalism Criteria: - Complete required tasks with mentees - Complete writing assignments Evidence: - Work report - Meeting attendance - Assignment submission Minimum Requirements: - Meet with mentees as one group one hour per week for 13 weeks - Respond to mentee email/phone/text within 24 hours of receiving them - Attend at least one on-campus and one off-campus event with mentees as one group - Attend the new international student welcome event during the opening weekend - Write two reflection journals and submit via Blackboard - Attend nine monthly mentor trainings - Contact mentees as soon as the mentor and mentee matching is completed, for informal communication

International Student Certificate of Excellence

The Syracuse University, College of Arts & Sciences | Maxwell School, International Student Certificate of Excellence, gives first year students the ability to systematically navigate and learn Syracuse University’s academic requirements and expectations, to ensure a successful college transition and ultimately academic success. Students who have earned the certificate will be recommended to participate in A&S and Maxwell career immersion programs. This certificate will be counted towards the upcoming co-curricular transcript. Purpose: To indicate that a Syracuse University first year undergraduate student has completed required college transition programs. Upon the completion of the college transition programs, first year students are able to: - Be familiar with the U.S. higher education system and its differences from other countries - Analyze Syracuse University’s academic requirements and expectations - Identify curricular and co-curricular resources and opportunities - Assess self-academic strengths and weakness - Establish goals and action plan for the academic year - Understand University policies such as Academic Integrity and Academic Standing - Apply academic success skills such as time management, note taking, self-discipline and others Criteria: - Attend required activities - Complete required assignments Evidence: - Meeting attendance - Assignment submission Minimum Requirements: - Complete required tasks by SU International Student Success Catapult Program in Blackboard before the fall semester (1st semester) starts - Attend A&S international student orientation during the opening weekend - Attend at least 8 of the 13 weekly meetings with Peer Mentor and other mentees during the 1st semester - Attend at least one on-campus or off-campus event organized by Peer Mentor during the 1st semester - Academic plan for the freshman year: draft and final version - Earn GPA 3.0 and above for the first semester

Certified Career Ready

The Syracuse University, College of Arts & Sciences|Maxwell School Certified Career Ready Badge, signifies completion of a program designed to help undergraduate students develop tools throughout their academic experience, preparing them for post-graduation goals. Required programming includes resume reviews, interview preparation, networking opportunities, as well as workshops on how to maximize experiential learning opportunities. In addition, a student must complete two experiential learning activities that include community service, research, internship, or study abroad. The Certified Career Ready Badge signifies that a student is equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary for success in whatever career path or graduate work they pursue after graduation.
